Things that make me go hmm...

Being WFH I don’t spend a lot of time mingling with people. I actually prefer mingling with Miss Frieda, at least she doesn’t shove the backs of my legs with her shopping cart!

But being a bit of a hermit makes for some interesting observations on those occasional interactions with humanity.

Here is my first hmm list (there will be many lists I am sure):

  1. Why do people always back into parking spots? My military driver’s training taught us the most dangerous maneuver is backing. Maybe that’s why I see so many crumpled rear bumpers about.
  2. Why aren’t there more left-handed ‘things’ on the market? Power tools come to mind but what about pianos? I would love to learn to play but the handedness always gets in my way.
  3. Ever notice on TV when they play a commercial back to back with itself? Is it just me or does that make you want to doubly NOT buy that product?
  4. And talking about commercials, have you noticed there are fewer engaging ones these days? I miss the John Cleese style of ads or the ‘saga’ ads like Nestle used to have. Now it is boom boom buy me with half the ad spent explaining all the harm the product can bestow on you (drugs).
  5. Food delivery – because my wife and I have nutzo schedules we often order food deliveries online (Voila rocks btw!). So why when they deliver do they pile the bags and boxes in front of my door then ring the door bell? Kids, I ain’t Houdini, so how the hell can I open the screen door?
  6. And talking about delivery, why doesn’t Skip The Dishes or Uber-Eats have an arrow with ‘this end up’ on their bags? Nothing like a carton full of upside down tacos coated in gazpacho soup.
  7. AI is a wonderful thing – until it isn’t. I am studying AI right now, so have been code reviewing the output from a popular AI program. So far it is hitting about 50% first run without major bugs. Going to be awhile before AI takes over code review I think. Bonus hmmm… I have been reviewing python code which is the programming language of AI.
  8. Ever notice how disconnected political parties and mainstream media have become? Makes me wonder if the same hedge funds own the polling companies as well as newspapers and TV networks.
  9. Who decided that tuna cans should have pull tabs? They are almost impossible to pull without flinging the tuna can across the room and you never can get all the tuna out of the can.
  10. Talking about product design, who at Cuisinart decided the bin at the front of my bean grinder should be square? It guarantees that the grounds get flung into the corner making lumps it takes a chisel to get off the container and into my coffeepot (I hear this from others as well, are you listening Cuisinart?)

That’s about it for today. I am sure tomorrow will have a fresh set of head-scratchers for me to ponder.

Cheers!
Mark
