I admit it, I am a bit of a movie buff. Not really a fan of the Marvel Universe, Tom Cruise movies (though I do like Simon Pegg, just not in the MI franchise so much) or the latest epic / blow-em-up extravaganza.
I like quieter, gentler, perhaps older movies, preferably with happy ending (I can hear Heather B. snickering already!). While most men my age are probably thinking about golf on a Saturday morning there is just something about settling on the couch at 8 am with W channel.
My wife rolls her eyes, but hey, everybody should start their day with a smile. And I have noticed my son scrolling for that channel first thing on Saturday as well!
But I digress.
A good movie has strong, well written characters, and though actresses are often relegated to a supporting role in mainstream movies, here are my Top 10 actresses (in no particular order):
- Meg Ryan (who can actually say they hated ‘Sleepless in Seattle’?).
- Carole Lombard (ANY of her screwball comedies)
- Katherine Hepburn (from ‘Bringing up Baby’ to ‘On Golden Pond’ such a powerful actress).
- Audrey Hepburn (ok, I am a fan of her as a humanitarian and as an actress).
- Jenny Agutter (I became a fan with ‘Walkabout’ and love how she is still so minimalistically powerful in ‘Call the Midwife’).
- Kate Winslet (so many great roles, my personal fave is ‘The Dressmaker’)
- Julianne Moore (‘The Shipping News’ amongst many other great roles).
- Helen Mirren (Powerful actress, loved her in ‘Red’ and ‘Red 2’ just cuz they were so different).
- Cate Blanchett (she simply ‘graced’ ‘Lord of The Rings’ – perfect casting imho)
- Lucy Liu (‘Elementary’ my dear Watson!)
Honourable Mentions: Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, Keira Knightly, Jodie Foster, Nicola Walker.
