Colourful Black and White - nostalgia found on youtube.com

I woke up at 6:15 am this morning and within 10 minutes I had logged into my computers, checked 3 email accounts, scanned the Blue Jays game writeup on Sportsnet and was halfway through the headlines at CBC.ca.

And it got me thinking…

In today’s world everything is pushed at us – news, weather, sports at the click of a button, anytime / anywhere, stock indices sharing your bus ride to work, maybe an ‘interesting’ post or two on . Of course I am an oldster, but there was a time when you had to be in the right place and time to catch up – news was at 6 and 11 pm, hockey was 5 pm Saturday night, Ed Sullivan 7 pm Sundays, Passport to Adventure Monday to Friday at 4 pm. There was a certain life structure when you only had 2 TV stations (if you turned the aerial to the exact right position!), that is missing today.

Maybe that is part of why we all feel rather isolated these days?

In my ‘older than dirt’, ‘bread was a nickel’ fashion here is a list of the gone and forgotten shows still hiding on Youtube if you take the time to find them:

  • The Kings Outlaw / Thierry Le Fronde – dubbed in English, the first strains of the theme song brought me full speed into the living room (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTpfXpOxPL8)
  • Butternut Square – The show only ran for three years but it’s most popular character spun off into his own show – Mr. Dressup (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiUQ7MWsfh4)
  • Passport to Adventure – Elwy Yost was a legend on TVOntario when I was growing up. Every weekday afternoon for a half hour he serialised old movies – Tom Mix, The Lone Ranger et al – you didn’t want to miss part 3 in the middle. I think this is where I first gained my appreciation for old movies! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OMDsOTdJ3o)
  • Telescope – Fletcher Markle’s interviews with the rich and famous. To some 8 year olds this would be boring stuff but to me it was fascinating listening into the ‘why’ of famous directors like Hitchcock or actors like Buster Keaton (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6mjIFn9Wzg)
  • Here Comes The 70’s – What was new and cool in the late 60’s into the 70’s. Got my creative juices going for sure, the girl in the intro wasn’t half bad either… ๐Ÿ™‚ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37z6eAp3D4A)

This is just the start of the list… will keep on diving. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers,
Mark
