Ever go to a party / meeting / social event and have a stranger walk up to you and say “Are you related to ?
My last name is fairly common, those Scotsmen / Normans etc. being prolific like rabbits, so I hear this on a regular basis. Now, if you know me IRL you know that I have a bit of an interest / obsession with genealogy, with something like 1800 people in my gedcom (Thanks Pen!) stretching back to the 1640’s.
Sometimes answering that question above can be a pain, especially for family tree members my age who are descended from a branch of the tree that split off a couple hundred years ago! And if you are using one of the many apps out there that display gedcoms as a graphic tree you will spend hours scrolling up, left, right, down then up again.
Soo, me being me, I built a companion webapp to go with my genealogy program for this purpose. Basically it is a html / css / js file that loads a gedcom, you pick two people and the app will tell you how they are related and the common ancestors. TFE… oops Easy Peasy! (trying to keep my PG rating even though that word slips out regularly IRL).
The app works slick locally on my laptop so I decided to integrate it into my blog. Now from the get-go in case anyone is wondering, ALL the work is done in the browser, there is ZERO data uploaded into my site or any logging / tracking being done!! Once you navigate away from the page or to another site everything disappears – NO retention!
