White wisps
struggle ‘neath navy caps
as we honour
those who wear them
in the wind and cold
a sea of poppies
at the eleventh hour
strewn on the tomb
of a young man
who never bounced
grandchildren
on his knee.

Today is pride
memories
traditions
and lumps
in my throat.
