Apples hanging ready for harvest.

There is a crispness
in the morning air
as dog days slip
like a molten sunset
beneath the waves
of autumn,
nights arriving
sooner than last week.

We hardly notice
in our haste
for school supplies
and awesome deals
at American Eagle
sale sale SALE!
or one last dash
to the cottage.

Or at our desk
head down – eyes fixed
on 14 inches
of total life
burning lines in our face
to fix a nested sub
or wayward salvo
for the mighty buck.

September lives
to remind us
the heat is over
after much complaining
soon to be replaced
by snow shovels
toques and sweaters
and more complaining.
