One of the things I like about recycling / upcyclng discards is the chance to play with ideas.
A few months ago I wrote about a messenger style bag I made from a pair of Sam’s toddler pants. Well over the last little while I have been toting it around, mostly to see if it fit the bill for what I wanted it to do. Unfortunately there were a couple features I needed that were missing:
- A decent place for my cellphone instead of tucked into a pocket or tossed into the main part of the bag.
- The shoulder strap was a couple inches too short so the bag rode above my hips.
- Like my cellphone my wallet was getting tossed into the main bag forcing me to hunt for it in the store – pain for a person like me who goes to the store with a list, get what I need and get the heck out of the store!
- The bag tended to flop open, risking my notebook getting drenched in the rain.
So here is the evolved Sam Bag, with a top flap from an old back pocket on jeans that doubles as a secure place for the wallet at hand – Check.
The shoulder strap has been lengthened and is now adjustable – Bonus!
And I have a cellphone holder on my shoulder strap for those times when Mrs. Boss-lady is trying to find me in Walmart (I wander sometimes, especially in the tools and electronics sections). Going high-tech the cellphone holder is velcro’d to the strap (with a safety clasp of course!).
The evolution goes on, and I am certain I will find a couple more features to hang off the Sam Bag!
Cheers!
