If you have been following the blog for any amount of time you will have heard of PYWrite, my ‘oh so simple’ text editor. As you might remember, the original idea for PYWrite was to create a straight forward / not in your face / not complicated manuscript editor for my writing projects. For anyone who has tried using any of the commercial or open source editors they can often give more frustration than success (my mantra has always been ‘Software is meant to work for you and not the other way around!’).

So I finally had a chance to update PYWrite and add a couple features I knew were missing or existing features in need of improvement.

Updates and Added Features:

  • EPUB Feature – Now I can create an EPUB of the entire manuscript folder that opens and edits fine in Sigil (a fine EPUB app!).
  • COUNT Feature – This is a new feature that will travel through the manuscript folder and count the total word count in your project, appending the date and count in a CSV file in the manuscript folder that you can see in PYWrite itself. This can be helpful for tracking your project progress.

Still to do dept:

  • Still working on a workaround for Nuitka. I use Nuitka to compile the exe files because the exe’s are MUCH smaller than using the sometimes bloated PyInstaller. The problem is that lately malware twerps have also been using Nuitka so now Windows Anti-Viruses are automatically quarantining my exe files. It is a pain! The alternative suggested by Nuitka is to buy a commercial license for $300 / year but this is a non-starter for me for apps I intend to give away! Stay tuned!
  • Auto-saving your files. I have been caught a couple times moving from one file to another and losing the latest edits. Still at the point where you have to click SAVE before moving to the next file. Still working on a solution for that one.

And that’s about it. When I have the Nuitka issue figured out I will reload the Download page and let ppl play. In the meantime if you want to try out PYWrite send me an email at Deosil[at]tutamail.com and I can send you the file with the Anti-Virus workaround I am using.

Cheers!
Mark

(pssst… I overhauled sPYGlass while I was working on PYWrite – 🙂 )
