I am not mad

Renee Good,.

Never forget…
Place and names change,
countries too,
It can happen anywhere,
anytime,
if you forget,
face value is relative,
to whom is speaking,
and the intent
of their message.

60 years ago I was still a wee lad, fishing for bullheads, building rafts and tormenting my ‘little sister’ completely oblivious of the world around me. Students were dying on campus, soldiers from poor families dying in the jungles of Southeast asia, blurred through the smoke of an evening bonfire on the beach.

This past week has been hell – for the Good family, for Minneapolis, for America, for the world. It’s ironic that to MAGA hell is the place reserved for everyone else, to the rest of us hell is the giant mirror we look into and catch a glimpse of who we really are.

You would think that for all the times the mirror has looked back at us – My Lai, the Tet Offensive, Tiannamen Square, the thousands of other times we have watched the evening news and gone “WTF??” that we would have learned our lesson. But nope, we keep on repeating the same things over and over again, like a movie on permanent loop.

We will get through this, there will be some sort of politically correct accountability, a scapegoat in other words, just like there will be a scapegoat for blasting Venezuela fishermen out of the water or the inevitable hangings in Tehran over the economic protests. And the mirror will be snugly put away until the next time.

“I am not mad” she said.

Neither are the rest of us, just sad and weary, eye strained from trying to look through the mirror instead of back at the blemishes on our face.

Peace and hugs,
Mark
